Maria Altbach
Professor of Radiology and Imaging Sciences and Biomedical Engineering; Vice Chair for Faculty Affairs; Director of MRI Innovation
Email: maltbach@arizona.edu
Research: MRI technique development, abdominal imaging, radial MRI acquisition and reconstruction, and quantitative parametric imaging.
Research Interests
Maria Altbach develops magnetic resonance imaging techniques with a strong emphasis on abdominal imaging. Her research focuses on novel radial MRI acquisition and reconstruction methods that are robust to motion, improve spatial and temporal resolution, and enable efficient quantitative imaging within clinically practical scan times.
Her group has pioneered approaches for high-resolution parametric mapping from highly undersampled radial MRI data, with the broader goal of improving disease detection and characterization while increasing imaging efficiency and patient compliance.
Background
Maria Altbach is a Professor in Radiology and Imaging Sciences and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Arizona. She also serves as Vice Chair for Faculty Affairs and Director of MRI Innovation.
She earned her Ph.D. from Louisiana State University in 1988. For more than 25 years, she has led research at the University of Arizona focused on advancing MRI technology for clinical use, including methods for quantitative disease assessment and improved diagnostic imaging.
Professional Profile
In addition to her research leadership, Maria Altbach has extensive experience mentoring graduate students and postdoctoral fellows and managing long-term funded research programs. More information about her work and academic profile is available on her University of Arizona faculty page and Google Scholar profile.
